Will you forget?
When all the fight is done,
And victory is won,
Will you forget?
The soldiers in their pride.
Who freely fought and died,
Will you forget?

Extract from a poem by David Mackie, son of  David Mackie, baker and his wife Jessie. Born 4 September 1891 at Burns Street Tarbolton and educated at Ayr Academy. When war broke out, David was a junior reporter in Carlisle and volunteered for the Lothian and Borders Horse. He was wounded in 1915 and given a medical discharge in 1916 when he returned to Britain. During his convalescence he wrote his poetry collection which was published in 1916 at his own expense to raise funds for the Red Cross.
